5 Fancy Dress Themes That Don’t Cost The Earth

If you absolutely love a fancy dress party, but are struggling to think of a theme that inspires your guests to get creative and have fun, here are 5 that I've found work great for a range of parties and ages! Encourage your guests to use clothes and accessories they already have, or to buy second hand, to reduce waste and be kinder to the planet.

The Decade You Were Born

My favourite fancy dress theme for a birthday is having guests come in clothes and accessories inspired by the decade you were born, even better if they can raid their wardrobes or local charity shops to find something that is actually from that time! This works especially well for milestone birthdays and is great fun if you can have a playlist to match! What could be better than dancing to Whitney Houston and Rick Astley in your tutu and leg warmers!?

Doppelgänger

We have done this one before in the studio and it’s great fun! We all chose a character from a TV show, or book, that we bare a resemblance to and dressed up as them. It doesn’t have to be a fictional character, we had ‘Charlie Dimmock’ at our party! A simple vest, jeans, wellies and gardening gloves was all that was needed, all found around the home!

Granny and Grandads

This theme is one that goes down well every time and creates some hilarious party photos! It’s super simple too, just ask all your guests to dress up as a Granny or Grandad. Think high wasted corduroys, trouser braces, cardigans and slippers, perfect for a night of comfort! Even better, you can search charity shops for second hand items to wear and donate them back afterwards (or keep them, who knows, you might like them!).

The First Letter Of Your Name

Ask everyone to come dressed as something that begins with the first letter of your first name (or last name if that works better for you!). For example, if your name is Sarah your guests could come as a scientist, a sheriff or a superhero. Your guests will love trying to think of something super unique and this one is especially great for all ages. It’s great fun looking around the room and seeing a variety of costumes and how creative people can get!

Group Costumes

Group costumes are fantastic if you’re going out to celebrate! You just need one style that everyone can be included in. Crayons is a great one, each person picks a colour (it could be a pastel or a bright one!) and dresses head to toe in that colour, you’ll need a cone on your head for the tip, a plain party hat is perfect. Some other group costume ideas are; Harry Potter characters, different foods, Cartoon characters or Superheroes.
